Rubber backed carpet

We've been given loads of carpet with the idea of using it for paths. Now we've got it we've discovered that it has a rubbery foam backing rather than hessian.
Is it still going to be ok to use it? I'm enclined to think it isn't, but don't really want to chuck it if it can be used  :)
