Clematis Under Attack!

2 of my clematis and a honeysuckle have been under attack from nasty bugs (now exterminated I hope). Further down the garden I have 2 more which are clean at present. Can anyone tell me whether it is worth spraying them as a deterant or would it only be effective to actually spray the bugs?
