Hello all, I'm looking at getting 3 hens to keep us in eggs and I was looking at getting them from this site  http://www.cotswoldchickens.com/breeds.htm  as it is near my home.

So I was wondering 2 things really:

1. Does anybody have any experience of this company, and are they any good?

2. Does it make a difference that they only sell hybrids, and not purebreds?  What are the pros and cons/ ethical differences of both?

MTIA.

hello,

go on to pekin bantams or practical poultry site and ask about the company there, someone will be respond to your enquiry.

chickens you need to check out how many eggs a week you can cope with, different breeds give different amounts per week. also different chickens are easier or harder to keep. Hybrids may ruin your garden by eating EVERYTHING, game birds may tare up the ground. more domesticated but specialised breeds are easier and prettier but give less eggs.

get a good book, talk to chicken people and then make a choice.

also buy a larger pen as you won't stop at 3 chickens as they are addictive.

best of luck.

I agree a large pen they are addtive,
At least they give you a month just incase something goes wrong.
You can always go along and ask questions.
pekin bantams or practical poultry site even river cottage breeders list poultry and eggs for sale, check them out.
Even if you get a poultry paper and see what other breeders are around your aera.
I learnt a lot about different breeds via Ebays hatching eggs site, some lovely photos of hens.
I wish you luck you will enjoy them where ever you get them from.
