Cold Nights?

Hi all - just a question that's been buzzing round my head in this mild weather. On the radio and TV, they've been saying that these clear, warm days are also giving us cold nights. I'm a bit confused as to how this can be - I'd assume the nights would be warmer too! Hasn't it got something to do with the amount of cloud cover, and as there's no cloud cover, there's no insulation, which means heat is lost fast at night?? Thanks :)

ahhh - I thought it had something to do with that - bu then I don't get how we stay warm during the day if there's no clouds...

the sun, being 'up' during the day is shining down on you keeping you warm.  have a liitle sit down in the sunshine and think about it. ;)

Yup, during the sunny day the radiation from the sun warms you up and also warms up the earth. The radiation is absorbed by the earth and also re-radiates out. Once the sun has set the earth radiates it's stored warmth upwards. If it's cloudy some of this is reflected back down (or sideways or whatever), keeping some heat in the atmosphere. If it's not cloudy the radiation just escapes and we have cold evenings. :)
