I know the teaching but, being lazy, & wanting to get seedlings into as deep a pot as poss, I tend to go for 3" pots.

Sometimes it's fine - at others it's not  - as below. Is this due to starting in too big a pot?? Or from standing on capillary matting?? = Tim

Might be due to you trying to grow it horizontally, Tim.

What's wrong with that root system? Just because there are no roots in the top?
Seems like roots in the bottom is even better since the water in the garden tends to sit a bit deep in dry times.
I must be very ignorant because I see nothing wrong with it.

Thanks, Ken!!

Ina - I reckon each pot, of whatever size, should be filled with roots before there is need to pot on.  Otherwise, why have all that compost? Most will fall away when handling. Tim

I too like to see a pot full of root but with greedy feeders I tend to pot on when they look like yours, Tim.
PS: That looks like a very happy plant to me. (Do you lay them down to give 'em a rest?)

No - to take up less room as a photo! = Tim
