normally, the sprouts go up but we've thrown potato peelings in in the past, and no, I'm not advocating it, they just seem to come up anyway..some of our seed  potato sprouts were on both sides, and around the mddle as well, some we cut in half as they were huge and had 6 sprouts on each  :)

Thanks that's put my mind at rest  ::) :)

QuoteI've been told I've planted them upside down

That is quite a common wind up have even used it my self  ;D

Don't worry they will sort themselves out, expect your potatoes to take around three weeks to come through (subject to the weather)

Just think of commercial farmers growing spuds they will not put in one at a time they are dropped in off the back of tractor, so i think sometimes we all try to make things to technical sometimes with our home grown produce. As the answers have all been they will find the light and grow the same.

Hi Wilko,

Dare I ask in what conditions you had them chitting? If the shoots were an inch long I'm surprised that it was not evident which way up they should be planted.

When I put my spuds in the shoots were approx 3/4 inch, dark purple, with very distinct tiny green leaves at the top of the shoot and tentative beginnings of roots at the bottom of the shoots.

Watcha gonna do  when you bake em, you won't know which side to split.

Think of the spuds themselves, can you get therapy for abused veggies.

Maybe someone should inform the Potato Council, this could be a serious breach of spud rearing, you might get mashed for it.XX Jeannine
