Supporting Peas

I'm growing peas for the first time - Kelvedon Wonder and I'm following advice from Carol Klein on GW and growing them in a length of guttering and they're currently in the unheated greenhouse.  They've all germinated, 2 rows along the piece of guttering and are now about 3" high.

As I've not grown these before I'm wondering how to support them, it says that they grow to 2ft high.  Would you place some netting stretched across the length of the row and get it to sit in between the peas or would you do anything else?

Grateful for any ideas as I thought I'd put the first lot in the ground tomorrow.

hiya, linda, we've been talking about this in another thread, something to do with nets, can't remember where it was or I'd let you know..some people came down on the side of chicken wire, we use it and it works for us  ;D

Aaah, I've got some chicken wire - I suppose I could get it fixed to two stakes either end of the row - is that what you mean?

yep, or canes, hazel branches, anything that'll hold it up, really  :)

That would do it but I grow tall ones... 6' plus... wigwams and tall nets for me...

Saddad - do you have lots of wigwams then, so you can have more than one sowing?  

What variety do you use - I'm hoping I'll get a good crop from Kelvedon Wonder but I've no idea what they're like really.

When you transplant your peas into the final position, just push a few small twigs in to allow them to get hold of something. It will buy you a bit of time when you can try and get some larger. If you cannot get free twigs the the bunches of willow that garden centres sell are ideal, just snap them in half.
You can use pea and bean net which has 3 inch squares, but you need stout posts to support it.

a good tip is to put some netting in the guttering before you plant the peas as sliding them out can sometimes be difficult and its easier to lift them out with the netting. i have made some pea supports by getting a post of wood and screwing small battons across them. i then attach neting to these. it gives the peas support and stops the pidgeons eating them. good luck
