Clout is an item of clothing or cloth so the saying means don't put your winter woolies away till the May blossom is out as you will still need it for cold spells.  

are you sure it doesnt mean dont sow your seeds? i have had that saying in my brain for forty years and thought  i knew what it meant!!  the older i get, the less i know !! ???

wow. well i stand corrected (not for the first time i hasten to add!)  :-\. what about all that other stuff cluttering up my brain that i thought was right? do cows lie down when its going to rain to keep the grass dry? does moss really grow on the north side of the tree? can a dandylion tell me the time? all this stuff is going to keep me awake at night. will counting sheep really......

 It was woolie knicks after all I thought so ,it was my Mums favourite saying I think, fleecy lined  Liberty bodices, I am surprised she didn't stitch me in them for the winter XXXJeannine
