Raspberries OK next to fence?

I’ve got a 2ft-deep bed in front of a six foot fence which gets sun until around 1pm. If I put a row of raspberries in there will they be ok growing against the fence rather than in a freestanding row? Reading through old posts, I think they'll tolerate the shady afternoons ok.

I’m thinking about an autumn-fruiting variety, prob Autumn Bliss or Allgold.

Any advice/suggestions welcome - I am a complete raspberry novice.

They should be happy enough growing  there but they will come up on the other side oif the fence aswell

we planted our raspberries in a border next to a wall, about 2' out, they've grown fine, both autumn fruiting, planted through weed control and mulched up with tree chippings hopefully, it'll stop the suckers  :)

I grew autumn fruiting raspberries in pots in the shade this year and they were fine so no reason why yours shouldn't be fine too.   :)

Raspberries should grow as long as the soil isn't too dry, sometimes it can get very dry at the bases of fences. Agree with MT about them coming up the other side of the fence though, and if your neighbour applies glyphosate weedkiller like Roundup, it might affect your side too.

Thanks all for the advice. I've widened the bed to 3½ft, double dug it and added grit and lots of well-rotted manure. Now I can plant further from the fence, and hopefully won't get too many shoots up the other side (although we have friendly neighbours so not too big a deal if we do).

I only dug it last weekend, as it's been too claggy to dig since Jan. Is it ok to plant the canes now in the freshly-dug bed, or should I firm it down/let it settle for a while? I've got them in a pot at the mo, they're starting to sprout new growth, not sure how much longer I can leave them. Variety is Autumn Bliss.

Also I'll have one cane left over, which I'll probably put in a pot. How big does it need to be?
