Hi everyone,

I don't have any space to grow veg as my garden is all decked but I'm keen to try going some veg in pots, anyone got any tips for me?

I'll apologise in advance if this had been covered before!

Hello new person with a question,LottyL. There are a great many things you can grow in pots,in fact there is very little that you can't.There are many varieties of veggies specifically suited to pots although most things will grow well if you have a decent sized pot and you don't overcrowd them.

Little Gem lettuces grow small and quite erect, Parmex carrots are round so don't need deep pots, squash will climb a trellis as will beans and peas, potatoes will grow in pastic tubs ot bags,  cut and come again salad leaves will grow lots in a foot square container.

I have several  fruit trees in pots, plum, cherry, peach, apricot, family pear and family apple, also blueberries and a fig.Herbs do well in pots. There are even mini caulis and cabbages for pot culture. If you have the space for the pots  most things can be grown, Scarlet Emporer runner beans with bright red flowers  look lovely in a large pot with an obelisk. If you have a fence or pagoda there are many things will grow there. Tomatoes, peppers, and cukes do well in pots too.Pick your varieties well and have fun  XX Jeannine

Hi LottieL, Yes you can grow every thing we grow on an allotment, if you use growbag, bucket, pots and hanging baskets, the main thing to remember is to water every day and feed with general fertilizer, every three weeks, the crop yeilds wont be as high as on an alloment, but you will enjoy yourself, treat the growbags & pots as if they are raised beds, you'll beable to grow potatoes, any legumes, carrots, parsnips, cabbages, onions, leeks etc, etc, in them,  you can  also grow lettuce, tomatoes, radish in hanging baskets and pots,
hope this helps

Hi LottyL

It might be worth checking out a few seed catalogues as some of them have got sections dedicated to mini veg designed to be grown in pots.

Hi LottyL, as already covered you can grow just about anything, so 2 things to take away from all this are-  choose your variaties carefully and for gods sake, don't forget to water!!! I grew loads of stuff in pots pre lottie, it's really trial and error, but it's the watering. They only have what you give them and on a hot day dry out really quick, so never mind all that water in the evening stuff, get out there in the morning to give them a good drink to see them through the day, and at the same time, don't over water. Ho hum, but it's lots of fun!!
There are some really good books on container gardening too. Can't remember which was my best as have lent to a fried, but i'll try and find out!!  ;D
Don't throw paper away. There is no away.

I've just had a quick Google search and have come up with a couple of sites.

I would say if you fancy trying to grow something then give it a go.  What have you got to lose?

Good luck!

For cheap containers, check out your local Morrisons supermarket for their black plastic florist buckets at around 8 for £1

...and what's the betting that by next year you'll be ripping out that decking!
