firstly, Hi..god, what a shock for you..we can't have livestock, though I'd love some..hope someone on here can help  :)

OliveOil

Other than locking them up securely each night.... peeing around the perimeter and around the animal housing and also you can buy lion poo and chuck that about... apparently that works well too.

Electric fencing around the perimeter might also be a good deterent.

I lost 2 of my best hens last year... never found the bodies though.

OliveOil

do you not have a shooter down your plots? We have 2 and they both said they would shoot if they saw them near my plot.

thanks for your replies. we do keep them locked in a pen but the fox had dug an hole under the fencing and with it being an allotment we dont really have the money or electric supply for electric fencing.   is that true about the loin poo? if so were do ya get it from?
my hubby has a gun but were not allowed to use them on our allotments.

Oh bless I am so sorry,
do make sure they are locked up secure at night from now on.
Sounds like more than one fox and they know where your chickens are now so will be back.
Pee is ment to work re-apply like OO says electric fencing may be attached to a battery or solar. I am not techy minded.
Did you sink the chicken mesh into the ground ?

the fencing is that sercuirty  fencing you know the type you see round building sites and no unfourtanty it's not sunken into the ground but were planning on doing that at the weekend when were not at work. we have moved them out of that pen for now there with my chickens as that pen is more sercure.

i'll tell my hubby to have a  good drink before he goes down tomorrow and give the pee thingy ago lol!

chicks2bee

thanks geo for that link i'll tell our securtery about it as he was planning on buying some fox nets (what ever they are?) out of our kitty fund as our attack is the third one in the last couple of weeks.

teresa

Sounds like the solid fencing pannels?
If you dig a trench out 2-3ft deep that should help and sink them in.
We did a 2ft deep at home and brought the chicken wire out 1ft away from the run.
The idea of the fox trap sounds good but what would you do with them when you have caught them?

chicks2bee

re; what do do with them if you did catch them               no idea i'd leave that up to the commitee? are they protected?

OliveOil

I'm pretty sure you can shoot as they are a pest and worrying/murdering your livestock!

teresa

Foxes are not protected like badgers, but to shoot you have to find someone with a gun and licence. Also depends who owns the allotment land they might not agree. Its a grey aera. best to secure the run and house against them.

Marymary

I know on our local site they catch foxes in a big cage/trap thing then drive them off somewhere miles into the country & let them go - don't know if this is the answer - maybe they find their way home again.

update

thanks for the advice
i got my hubby to save his pee in a big pop bottle (lol) and poured it around the pens yesterday. we did not have any problems on our plot but another holder had 2 ducks killed.  his plot is at the other end of the path and closer to the main road so if it came from the field at the back it must have past our allotment. i feel a bit guilty now.

hopefully everyone's will be ok tomorrow keep you all posted many thanks again.

reg. what to do with fox, our allotments are owned by the people but run by the council but the securtary does have a gun licence he does alot of shooting in scotland

many thanks again

teresa

our allotments are owned by the people but run by the council ?
If the lottie holders pay rent ( fees) to the council you could aproach the council to put a secure fencing around the whole lottie aera.
Get together and aproach them as this is not a one off incident? may work

they got a grant for it a couple of years ago and its got that green spiked top metal railing all the way round but there may be some holes in it not sure as there are quite a few overgrown plots on our site. we are tring to get them cleared at weekends though asking  other lotties to volenteer some time and work.
