cheap composter

I know most people know that most councils offer cheap compost bins, but for any newbies, I've just used this link where you just put in your postcode- saves having to find the right contact on your local council. I presume the prices are the same for all areas, but may not be.I've ordered a large black compost bin for 10 and a kitchen caddy for 2 quid and free delivery.(smaller bin is 8 quid)

I ordered 3 big ones for £10 each, got a discount of £1 for ordering online and the kitchen caddy was free - for my postcode anyway!

I ordered one 5 weeks ago, and it hasn't arrived yet.  :'(

I rang them last week and they said it would be delivered the same week.

I've just ordered a 5 litre caddy and a packet of bin liners - £4.50 each for my postcode, free delivery. No composters offered and the cheapest one Torbay Council offers is £18, so I'm glad I bought my second one at Lidl for £12 a year ago.

They've changed the prices and the range of caddies available.
The smallest is 5 litres at £4.50.

I use one of those small plastic dustbins I got in a £1 shop.


It's about a foot high.

i currently use a box thats 2 ft high and 6 inches wide and it needs emptying every 2 days as everything goes in here then into my green wheelie bin.

My bin arrived today.  :)

I've half filled it already with dead plants, teabags, peelings and shredded paper I've been saving in rubble sacks.

It took 6 weeks to arrive, I was thinking of ordering another for my lottie, but I'm a bit reluctant.
I'll see if I can get some pallets and make one.

My council offers the big bins for £6 each, so I'm tempted, but do they work? A few of the lottie old'uns said that they don't work half as well as the traditional pallet-constructed compost heap

There's probably not as much air circulating as in a pallet one, as it's fairly well sealed except for the little door at the bottom. The lid is a tight fit.
Being black, I suppose it does get warmer in the summer which I assume would help the waste break down quicker.
But only a true comparison could be made by composting the same materials in the same place to see if there was a major difference.

I've just ordered one. We dont have a big area at all so I've gone for the smaller one.
I'm not sure about the comparision between traditional pallet ones and black bin ones, but I guess it works out to be which one suits you better.
If I had a pallet construction then I wouldnt have much planting room left.

Cant wait for it to arrive. :)

I had a look, and some of the local councils do them.
Armagh has a compost awareness week, but doesn't say when it is.  ::)
