Really excited OH has just bought me a greenhouse heater on Ebay [& a lovely cloche] - it should arrive later this week & I know where to get paraffin from but I don't know what sort of temperature I should be aiming for to keep my geraniums, asters & gazinias going as well as chilies & peppers & aubergines which are currently doing well but filling up the conservatory.

Should it be a minimum of 5 degrees which seems to constitute 'frost free' or does it need to be higher?

For aubergines & capsicums a bear minimum of 10°C

Thanks for that MT, seems a bit optermistic in this really cold spell so I shall have to live with them in the conservatory a little longer.

my g/y is like a sweat box when i go in there (admittedly the last couple of days during the day has been extreme).

i go for a twin heater thingy that achieves about 40-50o

i don't get a choice of heats, it's either there or not !  all the cuttings seem to be doing manically though.

Thanks MrsKP, mine is a twin thingy too [though it hasn't arrived yet].  I am really excited about having it, sounds like you are keeping your G/H just above frost free which is what I am hoping to do- how big is your G/H?  What cuttings have you got going?

ps can you just light one of the burners?

MrsKP

it's a 8' x 6' bubble wrapped.

There's all sorts in there, fuschias, rosemary, lavender, calendula, alstroemeria, peas, sweet peas, some unknown cuttings stolen from my visit down south at Christmas (just done an in my head tour and can't remember anything else).

You could just light one of the wicks I suppose.  Don't know what heat you'd achieve there though.  lasts for about 3 days and nights if left on all the time and that's a 3.5 ltr tank.  Fair gets through the fuel.

Not found any nasties lurking yet, but I keep a good eye out.

My two mini-greenhouses are in there as well, double double insulation.

;D
