small leeks

first year growing leeks. Grew them in large boxes. but they became root-bound. Didnt expect as many roots. Approximatley 1 inch thick i have transplanted them last week into the ground. Will they grow & fatten at this late stage in the year or should i cut my losses and eat them small before they wither.  ??? ???

they will stand in the ground and fatten slowly - newbies on my allotment are still planting out leeks. But at oe inch thick they should be yummy too :D you can always price them up at the local supermarket and feel smug ;D

totally agree, they may or may not get much bigger but leave them as long as possible, even to next spring if you can spare the room - I always sow and plant a late crop of leeks and they never get very thick but they are delicious and cook in minutes  :)

I had some leeks growing in containers but there was frost and then snow (not in their container, it was sheltered but -10 degrees) and the 5 or so that were left were flopped over. So, I dug them up. Is this normal?

How do you store leeks? Or what good recipes shall I cook them into?

This year I actually chose to grow small leeks ...  Jolant

There are magnificent ... long and slim with 15" plus of useable stem.  More if you are like me and chop the tops for leek & spud soup  ;D

Then this is with white sauce, in quiche, in rissoto ... bla bla   ;D
