Protecting a lawn pathway in winter

What little is left of my lawn (and I have decided that I do want to keep it after all because it does set the plants off nicely) is essentially a pathway.  And from about now until April it is mostly in shade so it does get very wet at times and rather churned up as I potter about.  So my dilemma is, do I add some 'stepping stones' or fork out about £40 for a product called easy path (a roll-out, roll-up pathway) or do you folks have other suggestions?  Thanks in anticipation.

Georgie, some of my grass pathways are pretty narrow now  :P & I've used stepping stones. Apart from being churned up in the winter they (I've got 2 like this) were also showing lots of wear the rest of the year cos they are the only linking pathways. My stepping stones are sunk in so that the mower goes over them & were made from 2 housebricks each. Cheapo and permanent solution?

G, I saw some lovely turf protector at Barnsdale, next time I'm there I'll ask them where they got it. Instead of the usual grid pattern it was a nice victorian sort of pattern, looked lovely and was obviously doing the biz :)

Personally I have never liked stepping stones as they never "fit" everyones footsteps!. I have found myself tiptoeing down them or just ignoring them because it is too difficult to walk on them comfortably. It could work if there is only you using them but I would suggest an actual path, probably fairly narrow, would be better if at all feasible, which of course it may not be  ???

Beejay I know what you mean about stepping stones.  I already have 'a proper path' but that is covered in pots.  Don't ask!!!   ;D  ::)
