i once got to the point of shopping around for a spy camera to put in my shed. If it becomes persistent, it's worth considering.

Angle Shades, it must have been devastating to find that the fruit you had been nurturing soooo carefully had been nicked.

It's a stange world we are living in at the moment.

Gads angle shades, sorry to hear it! I got a pumpkin nicked by kids earlier in the season and I was ready to lurk around in the lottie with the cricket bat. Even worse that it's someone who knows what they're doing.  >:( Good luck with the other one, hope the runs wishes come true!
This year it's squash.

Unbl**dybelievable.

So angry for you Shades !

I'd go formal!  Say you need site security improved.  If you've got a friendly plod person, get him/her down in uniform to make lots of notes and take pictures of the scene of the crime.

No one on the plot is to know whether you're seriously reporting it or not or what might happen as a result of it.

this is outrageous.

I know just how you feel. I was gutted when someone stole my beetroot that were just ready to pick after thinning out. It's awful to think that perhaps another plot holder had pinched them but it makes you wonder when they seem to know what to take. we have 2 allotment sites on different sides of the road on our estate and someone on there had tehir shed broken into and all they took were knives. The same happened to us a few weeks ago so we informed the police. Turns out they were 10 year olds. It's very worrying.
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Plods won't come to sites for theft of a melon MRSKP ;)When an arsonist burnt down 12 sheds on our site(mine included) I was given a crime number, but they were 'to busy' to do anything else and advised me to take photos ::)

To cut a very long story short ,after the chap finished setting fires to sheds, bins etc ,he moved on to tyre slashing on cars in streets and racial hatred. The last episode woke the police up, he was arrested and a diary found with dates with when he set fires!! Suddenly the police wouldn't leave me alone and TWO YEARS later wanted statements and photos.Last week ,THREE YEARS later he pleaded guilty,my evidence having put him away. I was thanked and asked if I wanted to join the police force ::) You couldn't make this up........./shades x

This is so dis-spiriting. Too date I've found my fellow plotters generous in sharing advice, crops and cuttings.

I've an inherited plum tree on my site and was warned to pick early 'cos my crop might 'fly'. My reaction was to invite neighbours to  pick  a few but leave some for me (my older plot neighbour schooled me in this - "help yourself to the rhubarb - there's more than we can eat"). To date it seems to be working the plums but when someone nicks your stuff it's not just personal grief, it reduces levels of trust across a whole site.

Shame on your pilferer and sympathy to you.

roflmao ........ only in the UK eh ?

Still, it wouldn't hurt to "borrow" a man in uniform, just to take a walk around the site with you (you must know one, we all do) lol.  The more we pressurise this bunch into protecting us like they're paid to do, the more notice they might take.

and well done you !!!

;D

Our site has no security, and children and dog walkers use it in spite of a blurred notice at the entrance saying access to plot holders only and No Dogs. I've had children asking me for string to make bows and arrows with and I've given them some if only to keep on the right side of them. I was leaving the site recently when I looked back and saw a pair of dog walkers handling my yellow courgettes and Ferline tomatoes. Maybe just admiring them, but I didn't like it, and hurried back. Only chatted pleasantly to them, but made it clear it was my plot and not a public service.

If we did try to make the council put up a lockable gate, there are plenty of places in the hedges and trees around the site that people could get in through (and do). I had a long length of new rope stolen recently. It makes me think twice about growing the more desirable fruit and veg on that site, as fortunately I have another where I keep asparagus and raspberries and so on.
