I sow everything from seed but if you want to plant now there are usually some plugs of things like brassicas available at GOOD garden centres that can go in now(ish)

... or you can sow your seeds in modules on the kitchen windowsill or in a cold frame/greenhouse to give them a little shelter, then plant them outside when they are tough! :)

There's quite a lot you can grow from bought plants, but you're often better using seed, as the range is far wider.

...particularly if you ask us here in Swap Shop, Mark 8) People will be only too pleased to send you a few of this, a few of that, to try......this year, fr'instance, I've always grown Early Nantes carrots & not bothered with a maincrop. But now, thanks to folks here, I've got a small row of Autumn King and a row of Chantenay to try. Today (reading this Svea?) I've sent her just 6 seeds of Tigerella Mr. Stripey to trial next year and other peeps have sent her some other Tigerella too.

All in all, this is a great place to be, not only for the knowledge, but the cheery help you'll find everyone gives you.

So...WELCOME Mark  8)

PS leaving your fruit questions to others to answer - I've only grown from plants

I use cell trays (of different sizes) for most things.  Washing up bowls with holes drilled in for leeks, rootrainers for sweetcorn but roots get direct sown.
