whats the best and cheapest way to light and heat a shed in winter considering electricity isnt an option

I have a gas cylinder in mine. It wasn't intended for light and heat in the shed, but tea. It does do a good job of warming my hands in winter though. For light I have been seriously thinking about looking for a gas fitting from a caravan or boat. They seem to be available although I couldn't find a specific item in my brief search. If you are wanting more serious heating or overnight heat, what about a greenhouse heater? Another alternative is an oil fired heater from a boat or commercial vehicle (type eberspacher into a search engine). Depends how much spare cash you have, but those oil heaters have been around for as long as I can  remember so something would turn up if you are the type to tour the scrapyards. I also tried a disposable barbecue at one point. Not a howling success, and not very instant either.

Geoff.
You can't please all of the people all of the time, but you can't upset them all at once either.

I have a Primus and an old Tilley lamp. I used to have an ancient solid fuel stove until it got to the stage where flames were coming out of the sides and it had to be retired.

haven't got as far as thinking about heating!

hmm, I've seen an article somewhere about a candle  being lit inside two small terracotta pots - not sure it'll be enough to warm you through, but its supposed to be an effective way of helping plants / seeds through the spring

i use a paraffin greenhouse heater in the greenhouse  ::) ,and tend to spend cold winter days in there, and have a calor gas fire and camping stove in the shed. lighting's a couple of candles and a torch from the £ shop.

another plotholder has made a wood burning stove from an old calor gas bottle, great smell all around when theres any pine being used.

Oh! I just remembered I have a Coleman (uleaded) petrol lamp in the cellar - light and heat!  ;D ;D ;D
LOL kitty - you should have seen me putting up shelves in No.1 son's bedroom last week - by way of a HINT. I have the bloke, and the shed (in bits) and promises ... but no shed as such :-X

from a newbie and someone who has not got an allotment yet,,, what are associations views on using generators? I mean for noise etc?

Gav

Robert_Brenchley

They're used on my site. It's not the Associations that normally count here, but the rules imposed from on high by the landlord. I've never heard of a ban on generators, though some of the bans I have heard of are so crazy that it's not impossible.

ME!  i was all excited when i first got one and tbh you'd get more light off a candle flame.

i think i'd need another 4 or 5 to provide any useful light which is kinda daft.
