Sheep Fleece

Can I use fresh (or composted) sheep fleece for anything?

I know woolly shod can be used as a soil conditioner, but I've been offered some freshly shorn stuff for free (just the small bits that fall in the straw + is worth nowt) + wondered if I could give it a good home - it'll just be buried otherwise.

I've heard that folks used to put sheep wool, 'dags' in particular at the bottom of bean trenches, as a slow release nitrogen fertiliser.

It will rot down, but slowly. It's denatured protein, so there's plenty of nitrogen, as Ice said.

Just out of interest diana, where are you getting it from? Would be interested to see if there's a source in my area, especially if it's mixed straw and sheep fleece - the garden says YUM! ;)

My nextdoor neighbour is a sheep farmer...

If you've sheep near you I'd ask - might be a bit late for you as I'm in Scotland so the sheering is later and it's only a smallish concern, so he does it when he's the time (usually a little and not so often).

I collect wool from fences and hedges when out walking, it all goes in my compost heap.

I got a tub of "Growaid" from the garden centre- made from sheep's fleece, it acts as a mulch and then supposedly breaks down. I've put it on some of my pots & it seems to work, although it smells a bit!
