Fiddleheads

Has anyone enjoyed eating "Fiddleheads" They are quite popular over here in Canada. Sautéed in butter, seasoned with what ever you like. Me! salt/pepper/celery salt/vinegar Quite nice if picked at the proper time. Over here, towards the end of April

  'Fiddleheads' are the just emerging fronds of the ostrich fern Matteuccia struthiopteris. I thought they were a bit bland (never tried them with Glyndwr's recipe though) but tons are shipped annually from Vermont to some of New York citys' finest restaurants. There may well be a comment about me there.

John. Obviously you have studied/experienced the "Fronds" and must have been on this side of the world to know about "Fiddleheads." Please....tell us more?

ps.. Personally I don't like the bloody things. But they are a big thing over here aren't they?

Oh yes, fiddle heads, almost forgot about them. Having lived in Alaska for five years (many years ago) we ate them a lot. Living way out in the boonies one doesn't get to go to supermarkets much haha and even if we did, the prices of 'fresh' foods were out of this world. So I baked our own bread, caught lots of salmon to eat and trade for bear and moose meat, picked wild rasberries etc.

Sorry, got carried away for a moment. Fiddle heads, pick them young and sauteed with butter and garlic. Very tasty but I never considered them to be a delicacy. We liked eating them a lot, it was free and picking was fun. Sadly in the northern part of Alaska, where we lived the last two years, no fiddle heads to be found but plenty rasberries.
