Problems with summer cabbages

Hi All

Just wanted to pick your brains.  First year on the plot and first year with most veggies but most are doing OK, in spite of my ignorance ;D

I planted out Greyhound cabbages in April, netted and slug defences in place.  All was doing well, but I noticed that most of the them are not hearting up but growing a long stem with leaves.  They have been fed (once) and watered regulary when first planted out.  Out of 12, I have one that is at least making an effort to heart up.  What did I do wrong? :'(

Sounds as if your cabbages have bolted. It happened to me with my ovrwintering ones this year.  Any number of things could cause bolting, but its usualy something that shocks or stresses the plant into reproducing itself by flowering and setting seed. Judging by the recent weather conditions maybe lack of water has triggered bolting.

Unless you can think of something else that may have happened to th plants to stress them recently?

I have my summer cabbages planted through landscape fabric and a soaker hose irrigation system set up to water it (and the rest of my veg plot - sorry my veg are in my garden, i know things are different on a lottie).
