I'm growing Gold Rush for the 1st time & the leaves are turning yellow is that normal for these or do they need something.

They are a bit wussy as to colours. I've had mine go yellowish while still in pots before, but a few weeks out in the plot usually sorts it.

Just give them a dose of seaweed meal/liquid or chicken manure. Rocket fuel for squashes!

Mine are doing the same but once they get their roots out into the soil proper they will be fine!

Ours were looking a bit anaemic in their pots so I got Baz to plant out what we had space for and gave away the rest - lots, I sowed far too many!

Need some advice please.....I've got two courgettes in a grow-bag near my patio - they don't get a lot of sun but some!.....look very healthy in every way, give them loads of water but......seem to have lots of male flowers developing (growing on long thin stems so presume they're male!!) but on the same plant have had one female flower with little courgette starting to develop...

this 'fruit' has been in this 'static' state for what seems for-ever now...probably 5/6 days and just not growing any bigger - sort of 'stunted'.....what should I be doing please?....got lots of bees around as there are other flowers nearby....should I cut off all the stems & flowers that I think are male?

should I be feeding them now?....could I be overwatering?  :-\

hmmm, I am no expert but I know we just chuck our courgette plants into growbags, stick them against a south facing wall,  water when we remember or every night if it is really hot and we always get loads of courgettes. Might it be that they aren't getting enough sun to grow properly??

I am sure someone who knows more will be along to offer advice soon!

Oh Sallyann - that's what I'm sooooo afraid of....knew they wouldn't be getting much sun when I put them there but was/am just hopeful - get a little bit in the mornings (if it's around) & late in the day too but otherwise none really.....can't move them as I've no-where else they can be put....I live in a block of flats with my own little patio which again, doesn't get a lot of sun but my tubs & hanging baskets last year were fantastic!!

this grow-bag is situated just 'round the corner' from my patio on a piece of what is really a communal border area (which I've taken over to put my grow-bag on) but being at the back of the block of flats - this part of the garden gets very little sun.....loads of the stuff out in the middle of the pretty gardens but wouldn't be able to move the grow-bag out there!...don't think they (the association) would allow it....anyway I wanted it near 'my little bit' so I can keep an eye on it!! ;)

other opinions would be most welcome please?

Sorry to put this question back again but......

should I cut off the male flowers - or do you leave them there anyway to attract the bees - do they 'sap' strength from the females??

I seem to have quite a few males altho there are also some females on the same plant which have tiny little fruits forming (but will they grow?)....please see my question above re sun!!!

please what should I do   :-\

Hi HP :D
If you have male flowers only, cut them off and eat them (stuffed and stewed, or dipped in batter and deep fried briefly) :P
If you have male and female flowers, wiggle the male flower into the female flower.
Then cross your fingers!
I don't think the squash family mind a little shade - after all, they cope rambling among the sweetcorn ::)

Hi S.S. - thanks for that info....I did manage to move the grow-bag just a little bit yesterday so it's hopefully going to catch a bit more sun for longer.....which is quite early in the morning and because of that....I missed getting out in time this morning when the flowers were open to 'do the 'wiggling' bit  ;).....they're now closed up again, cos the sun has gone from my 'growing' area - will try to be quicker tomorrow morning....

when you say eat them (stuffed and stewed...what exactly do you mean by 'stewed'....put them in boiling water??

btw.....2 of my plants are of the 'De Nice a Fruit Rond' variety and are much smaller plants but have little 'clusters' of what I'm sure are flower buds but again...they've been in that state for days & days and never seem to get any bigger or show any signs of flowering.....is this variety much later/slower than the 'ordinary' courgettes??

Stuffed - with whatever you fancy (think canneloni)
Stewed - in a wide, shallow pan with a tiny bit of oil and water, lid on, simmer slowly til done :)
De nice a fruit rond? Trying it for the first time this year, mine aren't even showing buds yet ;D
