Anyone know what this is? It's a bit of a thug but it brightens the plot up no end.

Looks very much like Lysimachia punctata, as you say a lot of a thug!
Gardening is the great leveller.

Yes agree with Eric. My mum used to call it "Elizabethan.". No idea why! But thug it is.

It looks that way, thanks; it's also known as Yellow Loosestrife.

I have it in the woodland patch of my garden and I love it!  Great thing with thugs like that is you don't feel guilty about yanking bits out when they get in the way!

What's it's common name, I want to say Golden Rod but that is an solidago(?) not Lysimachia....

Yellow Loosestrife. Golden rod has masses of small flowers, and flowers in late summer.

It also comes in variegated form - which I think is prettier.
And a red leafed form called Firecracker - stonking red leaves IF planted in FULL sun ;)
