I planted this variety about 2 months ago expecting a radish of about 6 inches long.  The packet said they would be ready to pull after 3 weeks.  They did not seem ready to me so I left them and decided to pull yesterday.  Apart from one or two all of the others have been minuscule and woody in texture.  where did I go wrong?

I've found radishes grow best in soft soil, and you need to give them plenty of water. It might have been a bit cold for them to grow quickly 2 months ago. They are best when grown quickly, think they may be woody because they are so old.
I took a tip from someone here and am growing a batch in deep seed trays outside my back door. They are looking very good and it seems an easy way to make sure they get all the water they need.

My first row of radishes was finished tonight with only one failure (that produced loads of foilage but no radish bit) and the second row seem to be following suit although they have been covered with fleece up until tonight.  They been sown in situ (on completely soft soil, imported compost) and have had plenty of water.

The third sowing was on a top dressing of compost over a dug and weeded bed of clay so it will be interesting to see how they fare.
