Tomato Trusses.

Hi All,

How is everyone.  Quick question.  One of my tomato plants has now got 4 trussus on it and they are mostly fruiting. 

The question I have is, how many trusses do I let flower before I pinch the plant out at the top and stop it getting any bigger?  I have been pinching out all side shoots as they appear!!  Thanks in advance!!

Where is it growing? i.e. indoors or out.

I usually limit my outdoor toms to 4 or 5 trusses, in the greenhouse or in my case polytunnel I let them have between 8 and 12 trusses, sometimes more

indeterminate tomatoes will in theory keep growing until you pinch the tip.

It depends on how much you want the plant to yield and how soon you want the fruit.  If you want early fruit then pinch the tip now, but make sure the truss has a leaf above the truss when you pinch, to ensure the plant can feed the truss properly.

I had purposely grown too many plants, so that i could stop some at only 1 truss for extra early fruits.  It has worked, and my first ripe tomatoes will be picked this week.

My only experience is one beef tomatoe i didnt trim it and allowed it to do as it pleased really but had some excellent large ripe fruit off it !! so this is why i thought about having some outside this year

Yes, but if you have 4 trusses already I don't think you'll have a problem with ripening before the winter. Why not experiment? Leave a different number of trusses on each plant & find out what works best for you
