Silly questions! Peas and tomatoes

Right these are silly questions so please bear with me!  :D

1. Peas....  have got "Kelvedon Wonder" seedlings ready to plant out... Can anyone tell me if all peas climb???  (see said it was a silly question!!)  Ds1 wants to have a "pea den" so I intended to make a wigwam that he could get inside and cover the outside with peas.. and now I am wondering if I have the right variety!!

2. Tomatoes...  have always grown them in pots against a wall with supports if needed.. this year I want to plant them in my new vegetable bed which is away from a wall/fence. Will cane stick supports be enough? they are "Gardeners Delight" variety.

What a lovely idea! Yes, all peas climb, but to different heights :o Kelvedon Wonder are dwarf-ish peas and will grow to just above the knee, if you want a wigwam better get a tall variety (these tend to be the old fashioned ones but you could try Alderman). Check the height on the pack, just to be sure ;)

Canes will be fine for your toms, but get them well into the ground as a fully laden tom plant is heeeeeeeeeeeeeeavy!  Tie the plant to the cane, but keep and eye on the ties as they quickly become tight and can cut clean through the stem!

This year I'm using drain pipes with holes drilled in the bottom 2ft to support my peas. I dig a hole put the pipe in, fill up the hole, write on the pipe tom type in permenant marker (lost too many temporary labels) then I can fill the pipe with water (still 3-4ft out of ground) to get water right to the roots and it give good firm support.

Chap at the end of our site grows his cordon tomatoes outdoors in a row and always supports them by erecting 2 posts about 4 ft high and running wires across, then ties the plants to the wires.

Have started planting peas / courgette / butternut squash seedlings and realised I have no room in the raised bed for tomatoes / sweetcorn / aubergines / tomatillos....... :(   Thankfully some will go to the lottie and I'll have to put the rest into pots!

Wondering when i can chuck the kids/dogs out of the garden so i can convert the lot into vegetable beds... it's that or get another lottie!!  :D :D

Hi Becs,

Baz has found a tall pea called collosus which can grow to eight feet or more! I think he got them online from Victoriana. They have germinated in pots really well and will be going out soon to make a pea tunnel!

I tie my toms with a very loose figure of eight knot which remians fairly flexible.
All peas will grow taller than you think, except those that say they are "dwarf".. Mind you, in good soil dwarf doesn't always mean that, does it?...................
