My husband is in the middle of the huge task of painting all the boundry fences with wood preservative, he has done all the bits without plants on and now we need to do the bits behind the ivy and the virginia creeper.  If we detach the plants from the fence and then paint behind them, will they attach themselves again given some encouragements?  should i tie them back up. What do normal peoploe do?

I guess the virginia creeper will  do Ok, I actually cut mine down to the ground each winter as it gets too rampant for the area its in, and it always twines itsef around things. Ivy, not sure, but I don't think it would hurt to tie it in places to help it.

Sarah That reminds me I have got to do my fence. I use a small sprayer makes it so much easier for me. I also do the summerhouse this way.
