Peas

Evening All.

My peas are starting to sprout, currently got some fleece to protect them from cold nights.  Should i leave the fleece on or use some netting to protect from Pigeons etc, i would have thought that fleece would have done the same thing,   Also do most people grow thier peas up netting these days?

Hi Phil,Most of  mine are covered in fleece to protect them from all the nasties, till they are big enough to fend for themselves! they are about 3" tall now.
Mine are hopefully going to grow up a runner bean type construction with lattice.
The ones that are not covered  (ran out of fleece) I have tried to protect with twiggy sticks, when I go back in the week I shall know if this has been successful or not! ::)

I use netting but am struggling with my plants currently as the pigeons have had a feast. I guess I should drop some fleece over to protect what is left (not a lot looking at the damage ) I am a bit naive when it comes to peas ...

oooerrrrr, sounds like I'd better get some nets in then. This is the 1st time we've grown peas and I didn't realise they were prey to pigeons!!

Mothy seems on my plot, everything is pigeon fodder!! :'(

Doris, I can sympathise...they slaughtered (no other word will do) my sprouting broccoli and spring cabbage over the winter. They haven't bothered with the broad beans or onion sets though....might buy a blunderbus!!  :)

Better get those peas covered!!

No I t6hink I have the most well fed birdies!!!!! In fact I don't know why we don't have pidgeon pie on our menus. Have started my peas inside and then will put wire netting round with net on top. I can see them now next to the perfect carrots!!!!!!

How long should I protect my peas? and at what size are they "big enough to fend for themselves"

So far I have managed to protect my peas and beans. but as soon as I start to plant anything the bloody pigeons sit in the tree next to my plot and begin to coo. So I dare not leave anything uncovered.
