on planting my tubers to start, i was left with a few spare small globular pieces. 

These had little root or sign of shoot, but ive pushed them into small pots of compost, my question is are they likely to grow or am i wasting my time with them  ?

Sorry, no. They must be attached to a shoot to be viable.
