Growing tats in pots of spent mushroom compost

If You have spent mushroom  compost already or are getting it free  You could use it but I wouldn't buy it to grow potatoes in as in containers.   I have found spent mushroom compost tends to be rather alkaline.  I have had readings of between 8 to 9 when testing this   .So although I think it would grow spuds somewhat, You may be better mixing something with it t to lower the PH ..
If you are buying it I would  buy the cheapest general purpose compost instead and mix a little blood fish and bone in with it or any general . purpose fertilizer .I think you would get a better crop this way ... see what others say ..Cheers ..Jim

One of the best years i ever grew spuds was when they were up out of the soil and growing well and in the trenchs between rows, i emptied bins and bins full of kitchen waste, had a bumper crop and didnt spend and money on getting it!!!!

Many thanks both. I'll go the route of cheapo multi-purpose compost + b/f/b, then.

Gunner, I grow in my garden and space is limited, so this year I'm also taking over 2 redundant 'muck tubs' for extras...hence the question.

You have the same problem as me then, space, just taken over an overgrown lottie as a result so im gunna try the no-dig method for my 1000 seed spuds!!! lol.

And I'm heartened by your tale of a bumper crop growing on kitchen waste..my No2 'tater bed is last year's compost head raked over...no.1 bed is the year previously's compost heap..... :D

that brings back fond memories of some years ago alishka,..i was doing some land scape gardining at the time and a customer gave me some bags of spent mushroom compost which i forked in between the spud rows  ,..well you might have guessed it ,..later i was presented with a wonderful crop of mushrooms much  to my delight,..lovely

Tezz, as a now City Slicker I'm not confident enough to harvest the funghi.....don't mind going on a 'trip' tho........but would like a guaranteed return ticket.....
