brick dust problem!

Hi all,

I want to get growing again in my garden but they are demolishing a couple of bulidings right next to me.

It is creating a lot of dust that is blowing in - will this affect how crops will grow?

Hmm, hard luck, hopefully next year twill all be over ::) I don't think it will affect the crops growing, but it might be worth a discussion with the demolition teams to check for any nasties in the dust.
If it's just dust, the eating quality of e.g. lettuce, spinach and other leafy crops might be affected (they might be extra gritty), so you might need to wash them more carefully than usual. Underground and podded crops should be unaffected.
If you're worried about the amount of dust, you could protect the plants completely with fleece whilst they're growing. It will wash at the end of the season.
If you're on the plot whilst they're working, IMHO it wouldn't be daft to wear protective glasses and a face mask, not to mention a hat - it's not nice stuff to breathe in or get in your eyes.

Hi Shaolin,

It seems like an opportunity to blag a couple of rolls of fine green mesh off the demolition company on health and safety grounds to protect your lungs and eyes and your crop.

And any other good stuff they might have.  ;D

Seriously, they have an obligation not to spread harmful dust (are you or you family asthmatic ?) over neighbouring properties. You could get work stopped if you wanted to make a fuss so its in their interest to keep you happy.

Funny enough me and my girlfriend are asthmatic and it has been affecting us.

I shall get myself some protective gear then courtesy of the demolition company - by hook or by crook!

See your doctor about it, write them a letter pointing out the medical problems and the distress it's causing you, and they'll probably roll over and beg you to take what you want and go away. They must dread this sort of situation!
