growing lettuce

last year I ahd a great success growing little gem lettuce in the greenhouse, if I plant some on the plot this year will it have to be netted  ??? I know about slugs and snails but not sure about the birds......

They leave mine alone too. I also find that the slugs seem to leave the red lettuces alone, so I tend to grow more of those too. Now is a good time to get a few earlier lettuces under cloches, they will romp ahead ...

I started under cloches last year and then took them off no problems
but saying that I did have CD's vidio tape and tesco's bags blowing off canes to discourage
the local pidgons and magpies not just from eating but dust bathing as well.

Can I start some of in plugs then. I bought some little things from wilco that I dunno what to do with but I could put in 2 seeds an d see what comes I guess. What about beetroot tho.

Yes, bung a couple of seeds in each plug and away you go. As for beetroot, I have heard that this is possible, although I have never bothered, as I sow about mid April and harvest as required. By freezing beetroot, I can have it all year round then (it seems to freeze very well), as I am not keen on it pickled ...
