we have just been given a huge bag of jiffy 7,s by one of our residents, silly question, do we put the seed in the little indentation on the top and leave it uncovered? or do we sprinkle it with compost or vermiculite? Does anyone else use them with success and what seeds are they good for?

I have used them for the first time this year and they are great, saves on the pricking out stage, BUT they are peat, which is a bit of a moral quandry.
You soak them netting down, and what I do is pull back a bit of soil in the indent, and pop the seed in, then push the peat back over. (usually use the label to do this!)
I have got lettuce, Tomatoes, broccolli, flowers, in fact all sorts started in mine! Hope this helps

Thank you for the info D_P, have just put one in a saucer of water, and it grew and grew! I agree with the issue of using peat, but as they were given to us, I feel that we ought to use them, probably woudn;t buy them though. I am in the loo roll middles and yogurt pot afficionados. Anyway, when we get lunch out of the way, jiffy;7;s here I come :) :) :)

I've just bought some peat-free 7s - made of coir. I've not used either type before - does anyone know whether you can just sit them in a seed tray or do you need a special seed tray (which i have seen in a book)?
