To buy a shredder?

Hello experts!
With all the hacking back of stuff here I wondered if I should buy a shredder, so I can put the stuff to good use in the compost rather than just having a bonfire ... but on a limited budget I couldn't spend more than £100 - at this price would it work first time & then break, or do they actually do the job they are sold for?
Looking around they seem to range from £50 - £950.
Any experiences?
