I too bought one of these. without knowing anything about it (worth a try as you say for £5)  I have found the following:

http://www.cumminsnursery.com/cherry.htm (and under sweet cherries)

HEDELFINGER  Continues to perform well in New York, Canada, and Europe.  It has been around for more than 200 years and will be for a long time to come.  It is a medium-large, firm-fleshed, high quality dark cherry that resists cracking.  Productive.  It has proven to be very winter hardy here in Western New York.

No idea over what pollination partner it requires I am afraid, but seeing as I am close to a fairly large area of cherry orchards, I will take my chance and hope the same bees come near mine... and that their cherries are suitable partners...

I can’t speak from experience, but I’m toying with the idea of planting some cherries, so I’ve been researching this over the last few months.  It all seems a bit complicated, which is why self-fertile varieties are so popular.

From what I’ve found out, there are 4 “pollination groups” of sweet cherries.  Ideally you should plant two (or, better, three) trees from different groups, although, just to complicate the issue, some cherries from the same group can be compatible.

Since it all looks a bit of a nightmare, I think I’d play it safe, and buy as a companion to your Hedelfinger something like “Stella”, which is self-fertile AND is a good pollinator.

The other thing to look out for is which rootstock your tree is on.  Traditional cherry trees grow pretty large.  They easily get to 18 feet high, and cover a big area, too.  If you look at a professionally grown orchard, you’ll see what I mean.  They’re difficult (and expensive) to net, and not too easy to pick either.  Unless you want such a big tree, you really need to get a dwarfing or semi-dwarf rootstock.

Now then, I bought a two year old 2 years ago, 'Hedelfinger Riesenkirsche and it fruited during it'd first summer. Give me a while to go through my notes before you go out and buy a pollinator......back as soon as I dig it out....the detail that is, not the tree!

Cherry, ‘Hedelfinger Riesenkirsche’.
Red sweet desert cherry. Plant tree in sun or partial shade but be aware of where the branches are heading so you don't have it growing into your shed or whatever. White flowers April to May. Deciduous. Grows to 4 metres. Fruits from June to July. Fruits are best picked in July. Self fertile. Got pruning advice if you need it.

Gerrit inlad an' don't thee forgit to net it other wise tha'll 'ave nowt but skin an' stones 'round trunk!
and....dig a 18" deep SQUARE hole, lots of good stuff at the bottom of it, (You only get one chance at doing that!....The roots are quite shallow so don't plan on putting anything under the tree..keep it weed and grass free.
