Stringing onions

I did a search on here last week for a guide to stringing onions for later in the year and I wasn't disappointed as usual (Thanks Gavin, Ken, EJ, Lady Cosmos etc).
I spoke on the phone to my older sister earlier and happened to mention that I was going to string my onions this year.
"I could have shown you how to do that" she said.
"In fact, I ended up showing all my neighbours how to do it too."

Not an unusual story I think you'll agree untill I tell you that my sister lives in Brittany FRANCE!

How entertaining and certainly surprising, although perhaps we are clouded by romantic images of rustic French peasants ! I want to string many of my onions this next year, as I lost a lot due to rotting, through being in close proximity with each other in bags. We are never too old to keep learning.

I attempted to 'string' my onions in plaits last year ... what a palava  ::) Soon lost patience and 'knotted' them in bunches of 4 instead  ;D I never got the hang of knitting either ....

Palava - an excellent word that doesn't get used enough in my opinion. Another one to teach the kids along with mardy and gobby.

Thank you pete, that link shows an excellent method, no more bags for me! I will be fitting hooks onto the kitchen ceiling too.

Curry I just use the hooks on the back of the bathroom door. You might not be popular if you start putting hooks in the kitchen ceiling. :o

These are to store the onions grawrc, not for making the strings. They will be made in my shed on the allotment, where surplus strings will be stored. I will consult with the relevant authorities first though, domestic disharmony is not something I relish.

Stringing onions in our bathroom would definitely cause objections !
