has anyone used it as a fertiliser?

been readin about it in my lottie book however it does not say how or where to use it

i live near the sea so was thinkin of a trip today to collect some

any suggestions please ???

jus had a look on an excellent compost website and it says to wash the salt off the seaweed and put in your compost heap


mm- doesnt sound to complicated- so off im to the beach

I would be interested in hearing how you get on collecting it - I am not too far from the sea and have thought about collecting seaweed for the lottie in the past.... I wonder could you put it straight onto the earth?

Cheddarpaul, I take empty sacks to my seaside friends and pick up the high tide mark whenever I visit (rather than wrenching it off the rocks)

there is lots of info on the net but i chose not to put it in compost heap incase it contaminates it

so

i gathered two black bags of seaweed, rinsed the salt off then put it in a large container with water..  put lid on it and will use it use it for liquid feed in a couple of months- diluted

i hear it going to be v smelly :-[

I use loads of seaweed. Lukily the stuff i can get is from a brakish estuary source.

I use it for the bean trench and underneath my spuds when I put them in,I mulch with it,add it to the compost and make a liquid feed.

Yup the liquid feed does reek but your cucurbits wil lurve it.

I bung it straight on the asparagus -I get the stuff washed up on the beach after a gale.

Hi,

I gather black bags of seaweed in the autumn and just lay it straight on the ground - usually breaks down over the winter - weather /worms work on it.

Its hard work but I think its worth it.

I love the idea of packing it up in black bin bags then using it for liquid compost as well as then throwing it on the soil in the autumn. Looks like a trip to the seaside is coming up :-)

walk along the tide-line you should see plenty.
it is also good for making liquid feed a bit whiffy but excellent stuff.
also i do use it under my seed pots when i set them. damp newspaper ,sea weed then the tatty, cover and away they go i have had some good results.

as i see it sea weed is free its excersise and a nice day gathering it. it makes good compost/feed plus the warm glow of satisfaction that comes from having produced something.

dont forget the majority of the beaches where seaweed is easily obtainable tends to be protected habitats and removing the seaweed can be a criminal act so check first with your local envionment agency before you help yourself

Yes I'm a bit worried about harvesting seaweed.  ???Stuff that gets detached from its moorings and washed up I suppose is OK though. :)
