Woolworths have 100 sturon sets for £2.99 or 100 Red Baron sets for £2.99 -

But the best bit is.... they're on Buy One Get One Free - so you can get 100 of each for £2.99

worth checking out me thinks (they've also got summer bulbs in the offer - but they were of no interest to me!)

I'll be having a look then ;D
Last time I went in my local woolies they were only just finding space for the garden stuff as most of the space is still filled with xmas stuff they are trying to sell off ::)

The only problem with bargain offers from non-specialist shops is that they don't always know how to look after plants, seeds and bulbs.

A friend of mine has been asked by a supplier of potato seed to look at how one DIY chain is looking after its spuds after complaints about quality - the same supplier has no problems with garden centres (and some of those are not perfect in handling plant material.

So when buying "bargains" check them carefully!

Will definitely be having a look. :)
Make the most of today, because you'll never have it back again.

This sounds the best price for onions I have seen, and since I want to plant at least 400 this year ...

they also have all their seeds on buy on get one free. the brands are their own and a company called johnsons.

Looby Loo

I bought some sticks claiming to be raspberry canes from Woolies last year.  They didn't do anything so I sent them back and got my money back - no quibble.

timmyc

i also bought sticks last year from woolies - these ones claimed to be grape vines - which were pretty vigorous - but not grapes - here's hoping this year will be different!!

smokeygoose

i saw these too at woolies they also had rhubarb crowns which were all sprouting out of the boxes :'(

Lucky sods. There's no Woolies now in Cambridge, or any cheap shops.
For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.

I used to work in a garden centre and my Dad was horrified one day to find that we were told to "chit" the seed potatoes. What the manager actually meant was remove all the growth that was coming of the spuds so they would look more tidy.  They were at the time sold in net type bags so it was easy to get the shoots out through the holes. Now I don't know if this is common practice but I can't imagine it improves the chances of growth when put in the ground :-\

You try applying for an EU grant as a deprived area  ;)

Think I bought the only 2 boxes of onion sets from our Woolworths yesterday, hidden away amongst the flowers. I was pleased!

I have just been into Woolworth in Salisbury but they didn't have any onion sets.   :'(  They had seeds at 2 for 1 though.   ;D

I got 75 (weighing almost 300g) Red Baron for £1 - look nice plump ones too -  from In Store (used to be Poundstretcher)  Had forgotten to order red onions so that was why I bought the chainstore  ones - but in Browns Red Baron are £2.50 for 250g!

They also had onions ( I think Stutgart) for the same price but Mr W has already ordered Hyduro and Setton onions from DT Browns.
Equality isn't everyone being the same, equality is recognising that being different is normal.

We bought some sticks purporting to be raspberry canes, back in 1985, they were 5p for a big bundle. The whole family eat raspberries, to this day, from the desendants of those sticks.

ChrisH

also check out wilkinsons as they have

onions for 99p (also red)
bulbs
seeds (buy one get one free)
pots (3 for 2)

they also had some cell seed trays but can not remember the price

It was "In Store" where I bought my onions last year.  I bought one pack each of Red Barron and Stuttgart Giant.  We had a terrific result and they stored really well.  Still eating them but feel they will run out in a month or so.  Next time I will buy 2 of each, however, when I was in "In Store" last week they didn't have them in and its a 50 mile round trip for me to get there!  Fortunately my grandchildren live near the store so it is never a wasted journey!

I was disappointed - went to Woollies today in Reading - they only had the onions but no red ones.....and no seeds at all.....lots of flowers & fruit trees tho.....also went into Poundland to look for the bargain 6ft. canes....didn't have those either  :(

Whe I got my onions from Woolworths, I asked if there were more coming, and they said there would be several consignments of different things coming in over the nex few weeks, so it may be worth ringing them.
