Making progress...

Spent a  few hours on my new allotment yesterday just clearing broken bits of glass up. Ended up treading on a piece of old wood sending a nail through my foot...ouch!!! I daren't take my little boy down there right now for fear he is going to pick something up or trad on something which is a shame...trials and tribulations, I guess of clearing it, but its nearly done...I'm sure when we get digging it will throw up some more stuff. Its looking good though, and the soil is good. Talked to lots of other owners down there and they are a great bunch of people, really helpful and friendly, getting tons of advice. My husband is getting into it as well now - although reading the threads on rhubarb wine making got his attention...he like the idea of marrow rum!!! Not sure I share that with him! and he got talking to one of the old timers down the allotment who said he had been making wine for years, so I think Steve will be trying to get a few recipes there!

So, thats a brief update on our progress...besides the glass and stuff, loving every minute of it and great to get out in the fresh air and these mild November days...the sun was out in force yesterday!

Ow - poor you  :(   It's worth making sure everyone's tetnus injection is up to date. 
OH managed to cut his ear open on our first ever day on the allotment.  He'd used canes to stake out an area for digging and then forgot to put one of the Actimel containers we'd brought along on the top of it, bent over to start digging and gouged his ear - still has the scar.

Hi Diane, nice to hear your enjoying yourself on you plot, :D
but take care, ware gloves, a good pair of boots, eye protection,  8) (plastic glasses) 8) ::) if needed,
take some pictures of your plot, the before  :o ??? :'( and then the after shots ;D ;D, a notebook to remind you of what you done when  ???, why and how ???, like chitting your potatoes, or planting seeds, crop rotation, adding manure to certain plot, etc and then show them on here,

Glass does seem a problem on old allotments..I think its the old cloches etc that have been used over the years..On one of mine I keep digging up bits of old clay pipes (stems bowls etc) it is good to see different designs on the bowls ..I haven't managed to find a whole one yet....I also find quite a few star shaped little pot things apparently these were used to stand plates etc on when in kilns.
Also managed to find an old Honda 50 buried on one of lotties..
Has anyone found any old relics etc....cheers Jim

I am slowly digging up an old victorian fireplace - beyond redemption unfortunately.

I dug out a lovely old stone sink while working on my flood defences. Unfortunately it was stolen that same day. I know where it is, and still have hopes of getting it back eventually.
