Went down about 6ish today to get a couple of hours in - some blessed soul has been in to my allotment and hoed a 15ft square of four foot weeds, masses of mares tail, big thistles, grasses, everything.  Put in a very large but neat pile and wandered off again.  Apparently one of the older gentlemen I met yesterday, who gave my 3yr old rights to his wild blackberry bush, took it upon himself to give me a hand.  He was the guy who advised me to hoe it all down and dig the roots later.  What a sweetie.  Faith in human nature entirely restored.  Also happened upon our local butcher on my travels, who knows everybody, who has got me full rights to as much horsemanure as I want, fresh or old, from a stable owner friend of his - its all who you know this lottie thing isn't it!!  Great day

how do you attract allotment elfs cos the plot next door to me has them - well, he's taken on this plot but doesn't have time to clear it so he has allotment elfs, or 'a couple of lads' as he calls them, who come down and clear the weeds and replace them with empty lager cans?

if i put out a can of bass will they come to my plot?

I'm not sure how you attract them - I think the slightly bemused look on my face when I survey my plot gives the newbie in me away, and inspires sympathy - hey pathetic but it works!  If the can of bass doesn't attract the elves, at least you could drown a few slugs with it!

just the one?   I know they flew as far as Monmouth, I lost track after that - perhaps the Monmouth sect of the Yogic Flying Association bumped into them in the ether.  I'll renew the signal tonight

My lottie elf has the next door plot and today when I was over grafting all alone, whe popped in just to invited me to help myself to her spare leek babies, her strawb runners and as much parsley as I could stomach! She reakons there is  nothing worse than working a plot and  nothing growing on it (apart from the weeds of course!)  What a start - only had the plot for a week and already I can sense my grandmas recipe for egg and leeky tart coming out of the closet next year!   ;D
