I'm not a fan of cirular emails, but this I just had to "share":

The Sad Passing of Common Sense
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, that life isn't always fair and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their children

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Panadol, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when, if you defend yourself from a burglar in your own home the burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone. If you still remember him pass this on. If not join the majority and do nothing.

Whilst taking the risk of being rebuffed by someone on this site, may I say what an excellent post.

I agree,  - sometimes I think the world has gone mad.  While there was inequalities in the world that needed to be addressed, we now seem to have veered completely in the other direction to a ludicrous extent.

When I was at school we had corporal punishment, and I felt terrorised by teachers who were slap happy with their belts.  I was a very meek little girl  but was constantly being hit for not getting sums right etc. If the class was noisy we all lined up for the belt. It made my school life a living hell.  However things seem to have gone completely  to the other side now, where teachers are left with no power.  I would never condone smacking a child and would hate to go back to my day, but there must be a happy medium. Sorry!! I will get off my soap box now. ::) busy_lizzie

The government has just promised to clarify the law for us teachers - no going back to the bad old days but at least the right to restrain children who are a danger to themselves or others.

BL, I know just how you felt at school and can sympathise.

I have a 17 year old who went through hell at school and the perpetrators were never punished as the teachers had nothing substantial to go on.  She has become a different person at 6th form college and we are so thrilled with her progress.  Perhaps the threat of being punished would have made the other girls behave themselves, I don't know, am just glad it is over and she is happy now.

Is same everywhere Tulippa, and about time things changed! My OH is a teacher, and a colleague of his had a complaint made against him by some parents. The reason? He'd grabbed their son before he walked in front of a bus.....saved his life, but the parents complained about his rough handling.....

I've had kids threatening to report me for nonexistent 'assaults' so often I've lost count. 'If you don't let me go, Sir, I'll say you felt me'. Someone actually did it once and I was suspended for three weeks as a result. Something badly needs to change.

Diana , how true that is my how things have changed and not all for the better, we had a teacher who walked around with a plimsole in his back pocket, and woe betide you if he had to say anything twice.  I once went home and told my mother the teacher had hit me and she gave me a wallop for getting hit i coulden`t  win.  In my school days we were afraid of the teacher, now it is the other way around!!. :o
