My daughter has Broadband from BT. Their connection logo appears on screen almost as soon as the computer is switched on and BEFORE her virus checker logo appears (Norton).
She would like to know if there is any way that Norton (or AVG) can be forced to start running before the computer connects to the Internet

No! Anti-virus software will not operate/is pointless without internet connection. Tell her not to open up anything before the anti-virus programme has loaded, and if available, updated.
Hope this helps?

With broadband I leave my computer on permanently (with screen saver), with anti virus protection running, thus avoiding this problem.  It's also allowed me to set my anti virus programme to automatically update without prompting in the middle of the night, ensurng up to date protection.

You are at risk leaving your computer on all the time.
You are literally giving hackers time to take you to the cleaners. :(

Jill

Also have an up to date firewall to fend off hackers (I hope).

Attractive avatar there, Glyn!

I have switched autoconnect off so my broadband connection does not start until I ask it to - ie after norton boots up!

So tell her how to do it for me then!

Our computer is left on permanently.  24hrs a day.  If the protection is good enough, it will be safe.  As my husband's pute holds lots of his work and other "fings", it's like bleedin' Fort Knox!  Actually upsets the computer more if it's constantly turned on and off throughout the day than it does leaving it on permanently (as I am constantly trying to tell Rosebud!)

Eric, I will PM how to stop the logo appearing  :)

i think youll find that your virus checker is one of the first things to start as it should check the boot system first !!

make sure that both virus checker and Firewall are up dated regular !!

Sometimes just because theres no nice picture in front of you doent mean theres any action happening in the back ground

i think if you check you passed antivirus checks that you will find that they start as soon as you press the start button providong you have set it on your start up memory

The black and white screen you get at the start up is the boot system which also gets checked by your virus checker !

carl

you have to have it on your start up mind !! check your settings
