so i promised to let those wanting to know how the chickpea experiment went.  well fom 10 seeds i grew 10 plants and harvested approx. 20 peas.  not a great return.  a lot of the seed pods got botrytis went brown and mouldy.  i only got one pea per pod, the other pea just didn't grow, and most of the pods were just full of air.  on the bright side my soil will be slightly more nitrogeonated (??!)  not sure what went wrong, whether they needed a warmer temp or more water (probably both).  oh and the plants drooped a lot over the edges of the raised beds and got a bit walked on, ahem.  nothing ventured.... next year huckleberries!
It'll be better next year

Thanks for that fbgrifter.
It is always a shame when a trial does not yield well, but that is why it is a trial ...
I had the same type of result when I tried mustard one year, too much labour required for the amount of harvest.
But it is fun to try these things, nothing ventured etc and the successes do make it all worth while. Keep plugging away !

And you have enough chickpeas for a small salad ...  ;D

Probably why chick peas are not commercially grown here  :(  They are grown commercially in Pakistan, India and Queensland to name a few.  It's good to try things though and nothing ventured etc   :)

My Chickpeas have done pretty good...  I have loads of the pods amd stll more blossoms (I know they will never amount to anything)

I was suprised that they were green, just like peas. I guess the drying process would take them to the yellow.

I was going to leave my to dry on the plant, but they are still green.

Had about five plants. I think all but one has been munched by slugs (can't quite see through the nasturtians). The remaining one is covered in pods. But most feel soft - full of air? It's not looking hopeful for me growing them again next year.
gone to pot :D

I had a similar experience with Azuki beans this year. Grew them between the tomatoes in the greenhouse border. They did really well. And from five plants I will have enough beans for maybe one meal!

Still it's interesting to see how these things grow. And, as everyone else seems to be saying: 'nothing ventured etc.'

It's also a relief to hear that others are struggling with them - I thought it was just my incompetancy again!

Shame really because I love chick peas. But more room for something else next year.

TM   I am in the nothing ventured camp but you do get your fair shair of disappointments  :)  Ah well say lavvy  :)   At least you have enough Adzuki beans for one meal!  How many peeps can say they grew their own Adzuki beans (or whatever you call em)  ;D

I grew chickpeas one year - the plants & flowers quite pretty. Was it a "popcorn" type one from VidaVerde? I think so, but with half a dozen "peas" ...

Thanks Wardy. Next year I shall endeavour to grow sufficient sesame seeds to make half a jar of tahini  :-\ :)
