I know this will probably make me appear a complete ditz, but ..... do I need a passport to travel to any part of Ireland please?  (am in UK)

I believe the answer is yes. Do a google search for the passport office, you should get your answers on that site.

Oh!  Thank you muchly, Val.  I must have had a blind spot last night because I searched for over an hour on the web looking for my answer but never once thought about the Ireland website!  Heh.
