Potatoes have arrived.

They are going into pots.

So - we need something better than http://www.ciscoe.com/archive/spuds.html .

Hi hope you don't mind my butting in. I'd love to grow pots for Christmas, but garden centres, nurseries etc round here don't seem to have any, does anyone know where I could get some please? Thankyou.

I use one of those bottomless plastic compost bins, but you can use anything. Ususally I buy  B&Q or cheap compost. Put in about" compost. Then 4 potatoes. Then 3 - 6" compost. Then another 4 potatoes. Then 3-6" compost. Water and leave in warm place.
I've also bunged them (literally with my hand) into the compost heap that's been brewing away over summer, and found good results but not so clean.

Is now the best time to sow them for a Christmas crop?
I was thinking of putting the compost bin in my greenhouse? Does this sound like a good idea?

What variety would you recommend for container growing?  Thinking about next year now (not Christmas Potatoes)..... or is there still time to grow potatoes for Christmas in Northumberland using this method??  Sorry, lots of questions - I am a real beginner!

I put 2 potatoes that had sprouted (bought from the shop) and put them in a big tub and used the cheap Asda compost  ;D and here they are

I must of planted them about 3 weeks ago, which I think was a little early.

Thank you everyone for advice.

Tim that link was very useful BUT i thought i may have to do something different for winter potatoes!!!,  but it seems not.
Hi Pansy, i think the only place to get your spuds would be a plant catalogue, unless anyone knows different i tried the same places as you with no luck.
thanks again peeps. ;D ;D

Rosebud, Mr Fothergill has "Late cropping potatoes for Christmas dinner"
6,85 for 1,8 kg of seed potatoes :o

google: order seeds potatoes for Christmas- you will find:
Late cropping potatoes for Christmas from Mr Fothergill seeds and how to row them. :D

Thanks for that, Rosebud, but I've given up now as I couldnt find any, then I read on an online gardening page (a newspaper think, cant remember which one) that its too late now, so will have to be patient and try next year.  I look forward to reading how you all fare with yours though. :)

In a cold greenhouse the usual time to plant first earlies to get a crop for Christmas is August.

As the plants need warmth and light, if you increase those you might get them in 90 days from planting
