What makes the best support for peas?

Hi everybody, an easy question for all of you but being a complete novice with a bad memory (can't tremenber what my grandad used) what makes the best pea sticks, my grandad awlays used the same type.

When I took over my plot there was a massively overgrown privet hedge which me and my OH trimmed with a petrol hedge trimmer.  There was a queue for the resultant clippings  :)  Any twiggy sticks will do the job.  My lotty neighbour saves bits of wood and any broken canes and uses those.  The twiggy sticks make good supports as they provide plenty of branches for the tendrils of the peas to grab hold of  :)    I have one posh lotty neighbour who uses the red stems of cornus.  They have the advantage of looking beautiful while the pea plants are still small  :)
