Hello.  My butternut squashes seem to be growing OK but have no flowers, just green buds.  Is this normal for this time of year?    I got the seeds from a supermarket butternut so I am concerned they might be an infertile hybrid.  Can anyone post a picture of a butternut flower?

have been told on my site by other plotholders that butternut is a very late variety, both to flower and to ripen.
could this be it?
at least you have buds about to spring into action in the not too distant future.

of course, there is the risk with the F1 hybrid thing - but they should still produce a fruit - just not necessarily a butternut :)

Make the most of today, because you'll never have it back again.

Nathan, my squash plants seemed to be very late developers as well - no flwers at all when the pumpkins next to them were a blaze of colour. However, despite having not seen a single flower, I've got some small fruit developing, so they must have been there, and I must have missed them!

I did pinch out some of the growing tips a few weeks ago (those that I could find), don't know whether this concentrated their minds on producing fruit instead of taking over the whole allotment!

Don't worry, I am sure you'll get some fruit soon!

I've not got flowers on me butternut yet.  It looks healthy enough but has remained quite small but I'm optimistic (as ever)  :)

I've got one smallish fruit so far - and count myself lucky as only one plant has really taken off so far.  The other two are hiding under the spaghetti and trailing marrows !  I hope to get a couple per plant by the autumn.  And I never grow enough of them. Last year I got one to go out of two, and had two decent fruit.

I've grown them before and they have been slow growing and I only managed to get one fruit per plant but I still think they're worth it and very healthy for us  :)
