A couple of months ago, My Mother-in-Law planted a pineapple top in a small pot as per EJ's instructions (in 'under glass'?).

It has now sprouted a little side shoot and we are wondering what to do next. Can you tell me what to do please EJ??

Congratulations!  ;D  Funny how some sprout a new baby plant, and some, the thing you plant continues to grow.  Mine that did that were left to it, repotted when they outgrew the pot, and if poss, that was when I removed the withered 'mummy' plant, but if not, just left it there.  One of mine like that grew several baby side shoots!  ;D  Hoorah for Moggles mother-in-law!  ;D

p.s.  Kerry, how is yours going??

Having not had a pineapple in a long time, do they have spiny thorns along the edge of the leaf? At first glance it looked like an Agave pup? :-\

Mrs Ava

They do vary Roy.  I have some whose leaves are smooth but they have the biggest sharpest needle like point on the end of their leaves , then others are rough and toothed all the way up the leaves.  Watch your eyes!  8)

Cheers EJ and Jennym. Yes MIL is very pleased with the little off-shoot. I will have a look at the bottom tonight and see if I can see roots, and then re-pot. It's been in that pot since it was originally planted, so it's probably time to pot up.

Could you tell me what kind of compost you have used in the past EJ? I think it is in soil at present, but I have some coir that it could go in to, or perhaps a mixture of the 2?

Thanks again  :)

Mrs Ava

My pineapple babies go into whatever potting compost I happen to have, with a little home made compost to beef it up a little.  I also use stones around the plant, but purely for support as they can become top heavy!

Kerry

only just seen this thread -

i'm very pleased with my pineapples, thanks for the excellent advice EJ!

i have 2 successfully growing plants, one has produced new shoots which have pushed through the rosette, the other has continued growing through the crown. they're in the greenhouse at the moment, so plenty of heat.
not potted on yet.
size? erm...shoots have grown a couple of inches.
fingers crossed!
