woke this morning to find carnage in my veggies! i'm very new to this veggie lark and don't know what's happened. :-[
something appears to have slept on the marrow plant, squashing (no pun intended) it flat. there are no footprints although the earth is very soft. is it time to wage war on the local cat population? ???
then i noticed that a few of my beetroot leaves were no longer attached to anything! i rooted about a bit but there were no bulbs beneath. now i don't know if they never grew at all or did the marrow squasher have a snack before bedtime?
if i investigate further, uncovering more beetroots to see what's beneath the soil, will i do more damage?
is it worth planting some more or am i too late now?

Was it windy last night? The large leaves on marrows, pumpkins sometime catch the wind and get pushed around a bit.

For the beet root it could be slugs or indeed birds plucking the leaves. Still plenty of time to sow so more as well.

Our on site fox has been seen languishing on my plants, and the local cat finds it very warm if it gets under my fleece and lays on my carrots! >:(
I am with Jerry, slugs &  birds on my plot this year have been a menace, they pick my lettuces to bits, so wouldn't be surprised if they would have a got at beetroot, I often wonder why the birds don't eat the evedence though, the other thought is would cutworms go for beetroots?

I will be hopefully be planting beetroots for weeks yet.
