Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but here goes.

Yesterday I found a wasps nest in one of my small bird boxes.

Through the hole at the front all I can see is what looks like paper sealing the entrance, and wasps flying around.

Now, as much as I like wildlife, I do not like wasps at all and am allergic to their stings.

My question is how do I dispose of them safely?

Not sure how your council works but i think there is a department that deals with removal of nests , might be worth giving them a call to see if they do and wether they charge etc

You can buy wasp nest killer sprays that might work, especially if you've got a small nest, and would probably be cheapre than calling someon out to deal with it (are re the council chappies free? I'd be surprised).

The spray I have used before (can't remember the name though) looked like a large aerosol can but shot a stream of spray/foam a good many feet - so you don't have to get too close! Spraying at night also means there are less wasps about.

If you are allergic I'd get someone else to spray it for you though! Don't take the risk!

I thought it was better to spray the nest during the day when most of the wasps are away. When they get back they see the state of the nest and move off. Spraying at night means dealing with a nest full of wasps doesn't it?

Possible a good point. I don't know, I seem to recall the instructions telling me to do it at night. Maybe the point is that it's colder and so the wasps aren't as active? Obviously doesn't necessarily follow at the moment, night-time temperatures being what they are!

I would read the instructions thoroughly, GQ, and as I said, get someone else to spray them if you're likely to go down with anaphylactic shock if you get stung!  :o

I rang the local Council, they make a charge of £35! Excuse me while I faint!

I have been out and bought a spray can which does away with wasps, and other insects. It's only the wasps I want to dispose of however!

I  sprayed quickly and ran like hell! Just been out to have a quick look and all is quiet. There are a few dead wasps under the nest box so it looks as though the spray has done the trick. Shall leave well alone now until I need to clean the nest box for the winter.

Thank you for all your advice.

You brave thing - I would never be able to get that close to that many wasps  :(

Last year my son-in-law noticed wasps entering a small hole by the side of  my bedroom window, Doubleglaze chaps hadnt sealed properly. I bought a can of wasp nest destoyer, very good. I don't think you will have any more trouble. I was reelieved as my Grandson (next door) is terrified of bees and wasps. Take care. Lorna
